Nursing is a healthcare profession that focuses on helping individuals and their families recover from illness and maintain optimal health and quality of life.

In terms of whether nursing is a professional course, The Gallup Poll (2022) has consistently ranked nursing as the most trusted profession in its annual polls of Americans. Since 2005, 80% of Americans have rated nursing as the most trusted profession.

Nurses differ from other types of healthcare providers in that they have a broad scope of practice and approach to medical care. They play an important role in promoting health, preventing illness, and caring for all people, including the disabled and those who are physically or mentally ill.

Nurses are responsible for the ongoing care of sick people, assessing their health status and assisting them throughout the recovery process.

Nursing As a Course to Study

Bachelor of nursing programs are vocational, which means that at the end of your degree, you will be directly trained to become a qualified nurse. Teaching will begin with a foundation in the fundamental knowledge and skills required of all nurses, such as how to have a good “bedside manner,” observe how patients respond to treatment, and administer medication. The nursing degree will then allow you to apply what you’ve learned in a practical setting, such as a hospital ward, as well as specialize in an area of nursing that interests you.

Bachelor of nursing course structures varies across the world, but in Nigeria, they typically last four to five years.

Your path to becoming qualified nurses may differ as well. In Nigeria, for example, becoming a registered nurse (RN) does not require a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Instead, you could pursue a two or three-year diploma or associate’s degree in nursing at a nursing school, both of which will prepare you to become a licensed nurse.

To become a registered nurse, ensure that the nursing program you choose is approved by the relevant authority in the country where you want to work.
